Normans Hargreaves Company

Norman Hargreaves History

Norman Hargreaves
Norman Hargreaves
Before Norman set up shop in Berwick upon Tweed he was a soldier in the British Army. Norman Hargreaves played a vital part in WWII, stationed in Iceland, his role was to manage communications and each day he would climb a huge mast in freezing conditions with absolutely no health or safety to ensure that the Arm could stay in touch with the rest of the allies.

Norman would also work tirelessly in the temporary air fields which would spring up in an attempt to confuse the German enemies. His unit would lay out the runway in the dark and only when the planes grew closer would they turn the lights on to land.

After the War, Norman and his wife Elizabeth, better known as Betty moved from Edinburgh to Berwick upon Tweed with son John, who was just 4 at the time.

It was in 1952 that the couple opened the shop to the public. Norman would hop onto his bicycle which was fitted with a big basket at the front to deliver goods and repair products in the local area. The shop was a huge success and brought new electrical products to the people of Berwick after such a huge shortage during the war.

Elizabeth Hargreaves

Elizabeth, who was better known as Betty, worked alongside her husband as partner in the business. Qualified as an accountant, Betty managed the accounts and store. Her passion was Opera and she was well known for her performances in the Edinburgh festival.

John Hargreaves
John Hargreaves
John was an only child, so after his move to Berwick at the age of just 4, he made lots of friends during his time at Berwick Primary School. He later moved to Barnard Castle Public School where he completed his studies and excelled in sports, making the 1st team for rugby, cricket and swimming for Northumberland.

John loved school and so he wanted to further his education at Napier College where he studied Electronics. After only just one year, John’s father fell ill, so he left college and returned to Berwick to help his mother in the shop.

He later completed his apprenticeship and training in Ashington. Betty taught him accounting and Norman worked with John to give him an excellent understanding in electronics.

John’s passion for excellence took him in search of high quality appliances. It didn’t take him long to discover the world of Miele, new to the UK but well known for its quality in Europe.
From this point, Hargreaves have been Miele Dealers, selling, repairing and conditioning ever since. The company now stretches from Edinburgh to Bathgate, south into the Scottish Borders and further still into Northumberland, Durham and Darlington.

Norman Hargreaves is the only Premium Miele Partner from Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders, Northumberland and Newcastle.

Patricia Tidy
Patricia TidyAccountant
Pat started working at Norman Hargreaves in October 2015 after a move from busy Berkshire to lovely rural Northumberland. Swapping her manic accounting job (which she had been doing for 14 years) with a large Company in the Care Sector for that of Part Time Bookkeeper at Norman Hargreaves gives her time to carry out her other interests, and enjoy a slower rural pace of life.
